A Course In You: A Missed Opportunity

Between two and three weeks ago I received an e-mail from someone who was launching a website to encourage people to educate themselves about themselves called “The School Of You,” which offers a variety of courses related to personality theory under the project of “A Course In You.” The material seems particularly devoted to those who are in school and who might want to learn about themselves and seek out career choices and other related life decisions based on a more complete understanding of their basic personality, with the aim of finding something that would suit their strengths well and that would blend well with their approach to life. Although I was not able for a variety of reasons (see below), I was unable to get as much out of the course as I would have liked, I would still like to talk about the idea of it and what I found in it because it is something that may be of interest to others, and why I consider it a bit of a missed opportunity as far as it relates to myself personally.

Now, those who know me and have read my blog know that I am deeply interested in personality theory. And I have found myself involved in a great many conversations as well as research projects relating to various personality tests, and I have known people who have themselves sought to create personality tests themselves based on their own desire to better understand themselves and others and better navigate the boundaries of personality. Whether I have thought of myself or heard others describe themselves as types of fruit, four-letter combinations of the MBTI, types of animals, Ennegram numbers, or combinations of the five-factor test, there is a widespread interest in people seeking to understand themselves better and ponder how their basic personality affects their perspective and their choices in life. As there are clearly a lot of people who want to learn more about themselves from a personal perspective, I think that this course, at least from what I was able to see, has a lot of promise.

Of course, I was unable to take advantage of it. And there are a lot of reasons for this. The most basic is simply that it is difficult for me to do anything with my personal e-mail, as I cannot get it from my work computer and my own personal computer has some major issues (as does my phone for this sort of thing). The combination of limited time and technical problems made it hard to log in, especially because I was unable to log in from my work computer based on my personal address, given the security features of the site. Those who have better access and more time will likely find this website to give them a great deal of very interesting and insightful commentary on personality theory tailored to the person taking this course in self-discovery.
