Product Review: 10W Clark’s Kalden Step Slip On Shoes

As I commented on earlier [1], my own knowledge of shoes is not particularly profound. As I was trying to think of what to say about this product, at least something that I could say intelligently, I pondered as well that this is my second product review here, and the other one was about socks [2], and so now both of my product reviews have related to foot products, which is certainly notable in light of my frequent foot problems. So, I would like to make a note about how I acquired these shoes to wear them and also comment a bit on what I think about them having worn them while going out and about today, and make some brief comments on their style, given my limited appreciation of shoe style, with the option to write about them further here in an update when the shoes are properly broken in, if there is anything else that needs to be said at that point.

So, since my collection of shoes, particularly professional shoes, is fairly limited, my mother felt it appropriate to give as part of her general birthday present context a pair of brown slip-on shoes. Since they were out of my size, namely 9 1/2 W, she got a 10W, which was the closest size available. In terms of the fit, the shoes were a little bit long, as expected, but were exactly wide enough for maximum comfort. The shoes offered some solid support and the heel was fairly large for a men’s shoe at about an inch, but it was a broad heel to minimize the effect on the ankle. According to at least one person who saw the shoes, they were reasonably stylish, and match well with the brown and tan suits I have and my khakis and brown and green polo shirts. I wear enough brown that these shoes are probably good to wear at least a couple times a week, and some Sabbaths as well, given that they are definitely church appropriate footwear, which is not something that can be said about any pair of shoes. These will definitely be worn and broken in, that’s for sure.

Concerning the feel of the shoes, the higher than normal heel is definitely something I noticed in wearing the shoes for the first time. The shoes were wide enough to be comfortable with no squishing, which is important, and they were easy to walk in and slip my feet in, which are high priorities for shoes. I have not stood in them for long periods of time, like I tend to do at church services, but they were comfortable enough driving and in doing my grocery shopping with my characteristic speedy walk. While these are clearly not sports-appropriate shoes, they do appear to handle my somewhat heavy and speedy gait with a feel of protection around all sides and on the ankle. Suffice it to say that all in all, my mother managed to snag an excellent pair of shoes, which manage to look good and be practical to wear as well for my purposes at work and church. Consider this a successful effort, at least as it stands right now.

  1. Whew… Intended as an early Feast gift. 🙂 I’m happy that they seem to be serving their intended purpose.
