Both domains face challenges of specification (clearly defining desired outcomes), robustness (maintaining alignment under pressure), and scalability (preserving alignment as complexity increases).

For instance, research on quadratic voting mechanisms aims to better aggregate citizen preferences, while AI alignment researchers explore preference learning algorithms. Both fields recognize that perfect alignment may be impossible, but seek robust approximations through careful institutional design.
